The rising tensions between the West and the global South have driven growing geopolitical concerns. With economies preparing for the worst, the BRICS bloc has made a major announcement regarding the US dollar amid President Donald Trump’s 100% tariff warning.

During his most recent tirade targeting the alliance, Trump proclaimed that “BRICS is dead.” He noted that the nation seeking to lead a de-dollarization trend in the global economy would face unprecedented import taxes. Now, the bloc has responded, and it could give insight into how far this conflict will go.

BRICS Speak Up on US Dollar as Trump Tariff Looms Large

Less than two months into his second nonconsecutive term as US President, Donald Trump has made his efforts to preserve the dollar one of his most important missions. That is clearly seen in the action he has taken against the BRICS alliance. The group has sought to lessen reliance on the greenback and has barely made a dent in the currency’s global usage rate. However, the mere suggestion of limiting uses of the asset has driven hyper-aggressive economic policy from the commander in chief.

Now the collective has responded. Indeed, the BRICS alliance has made a major announcement regarding the US dollar as Trump’s 100% tariff threat looms large. The president previously noted that his response would ultimately end the alliance as the world knows it.

In response, the economic alliance has remained committed to the direction of its collaborative policies. Specifically, Russian foreign minister Sergey Lavrov confirmed the bloc is moving forward with plans for an alternative payment system to that of the West.

“This is being discussed in BRCIS at the initiative of [Brazil President Luiz Inacio] Lula da Silva,” Lavrov said. “The previous summit stated a decision on the necessity of developing a proposal on alternative payment platforms through finance ministries and central banks,” he added.

The statement shows that Russia and the alliance as a whole have not been deterred. They are still in the hunt for a payment system that will counter things like the Western-controlled SWIFT. In the end, it is likely the smartest play for the group. If Donald Trump has proven anything, it’s that the weaponization of the US dollar is an inevitable reality of the global power.
